Place foresight resources in alpha order under each category, please.

Statistics are either quotes, lists, or other verbal items that also have numbers associated with them. You can post a graphic (chart, etc.) but must add at least a very brief verbal caption to go with the numbers. Please add only stats you think are relevant to futures studies or foresight development, and that seem really worth a student's time to look at. List your source in parentheses after the statistic, and provide link URLs if you got them off the web. Be sure to list your name at the end (use a dash before your name) to receive credit. Post each statistic or related group of statistics in the appropriate Category and Subcategory below. Thanks for sharing your discoveries for this and future classes!

Top Foresight Statistics

1. Positive (Inspiring, Insightful, Clarifying, or Cool)

1.7 billion of 6.7 billion people regularly use the world wide web as of 2009. (Internet World Stats)

2. Mixed/Uncertain (Complex, Multifaceted, Positives and Negatives, Meaning Unclear)
    In the next 10 years China is predicted to be the #1 English speaking country.

    Although the majority of the most serious crimes saw decreases in 2004/05 relative to 2003/04 (with some having seen continuing declines over a number of years), there were a few categories of crime in which the recorded number of incidents rose. These include:
    rape (which rose by 5% to 55,114)
    indecent assault (which rose by 9% to 10,123)
    common assault (which rose by 5% to 267,857)
    drug offences (34% to 84,001)
    drunken driving (20% to 29,927)
    truck hijacking (3% to 930)
    cash-in-transit robberies (15% to 220)
    bank robbery (7% to 58).
    The really serious crimes are decreasing in popularity but the less serious ones are increasing, which is likely due to how our legal system works and the current trend towards less severe punishments for less serious offenses, many more "slaps on the wrist" are used today than in previous decades. The Rising Age of Computer Employment
    The results are rather scary. After looking at trends in machine vision, speech, reasoning, and movement, and estimating how important these are for doing various kinds of work, the author estimates that displacement rates could be over 80% in some fields-- sales, administrative support, food preparation, and personal care. These are also the sectors that employ the largest number of people. The safest fields for humans? Law (6%), medicine (10%), science (10%), and engineering (11%)-- fields which currently employ the smallest number of people.

    A team of distinguished experts with broadly varying backgrounds was able to converge on a common vision of the likely future of medical device technologies over the next decade. The projected developments generally fall into six major categories: (1) computer-related technologies, (2) molecular medicine, (3) home- and self-care, (4) minimally invasive procedures, (5) device/drug hybrid products, and (6) organ replacement/assist devices using both hardware and tissue-engineered components. These developments suggest an unfolding pattern of "smart" technologies that integrate engineering and biological approaches, and that enable increasingly precise clinical interventions as well as a progressively decentralized health care delivery system. 95% of all church budgets in the US are spent on our own comforts and programs. Less than 1% is spent on evangelism to the most unreached. 40% of the church’s entire global foreign mission resources are being deployed to just 10 oversaturated countries already possessing strong citizen-run home ministries.

    More than 90% of all Christian materials are in English, but only 8% of the world speaks English.

    All costs of ministry divided by number of baptisms per year. Cost per baptism in India - $9803 per person. Cost per baptism in the United States - $1,550,000 per person.

    Every year the churches hold a mega census costing $1.1 billion, sending out 10 million questionnaires in 3,000 languages, which covers 180 major religious subjects.

    We’ll incorporate wireless technology into our thought processing by 2030.
    In the next 25 years, we’ll learn how to augment our 100 trillion very slow interneuronal connections with high-speed virtual connections via nanorobotics. This will allow us to greatly boost our pattern-recognition abilities, memories, and overall thinking capacity, as well as to directly interface with powerful forms of computer intelligence and to each other. By the end of the 2030s, we will be able to move beyond the basic architecture of the brain’s neural regions. (source:http://www.wfs.org/tomorrow/index.htm) (Miguel Almendariz)

    Organic Agriculture

    "Organic agriculture is expanding rapidly in the United States, as consumer interest continues to gather momentum and new organic production and marketing systems evolve. In the wake of USDA's implementation of national organic standards in October 2002, continued growth in the industry is expected. Similarly, consumer demand rose throughout the 1990s-20 percent or more annually-and that pace has continued. Organic products are now available in nearly 20,000 natural food stores and 73 percent of conventional grocery stores, and account for approximately 1-2 percent of total food sales in the U.S."

Nationally, the problem is major, says Gary Bishop, a University of Denver researcher. The devastating effect that changes in natural conditions can have was brought home again last week with the release of new data on the loss to fisheries resources resulting from the recent Sumatra earthquake and its associated tsunami. According to the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), there were losses of US$520 million suffered by the fishing sector of the seven worst-affected countries, with over 111,000 vessels destroyed or damaged, 36,000 engines lost and 1.7 million units of fishing gear ruined. Although we go on and on about the great damage people can cause the environment can cause damage just as severe. Figure 23 - Total Oil exports from the assessed countries, including the projections for the 2006 - 2020 period.

    The graph in Figure 23 depicts a very clear scenario: total exports from the assessed countries declines from hereafter, never recovering again. The decline rate grows with time, as seen Figure 24:

    Statistics - ForesightDevelopment@UAT-CourseWiki

    Figure 24 - Total Oil exports and evolution rates for the assessed countries, including the projections for the 2006 - 2020 period.

    The declines rates resulting from the projections made are never higher than those observed during the early 1980s, still in 15 years total oil exports decline almost 40% from 36.2 Mb/d to 22.6 Mb/d. This period ahead might not have much in common with the crisis lived in the 1970s and 1980s, but if economic recession takes over in importing countries, periods of heavy decline might happen, followed by periods of recovery. It's worth looking closely to this period in figure 25.

    Statistics - ForesightDevelopment@UAT-CourseWiki

    Figure 25 - Decline rates in total oil exports for the assessed countries during the projected period, 2006 to 2020.

    Four different periods can be identified:
    . 2006 - 2010 : slow decline below 2%/year;
    . 2011 - 2013 : first acceleration to a decline rate close to 4%/year;
    . 2014 - 2016 : steady decline at 4%/year;
    . 2017 - 2020 : new acceleration up 5%/year.
    The first acceleration is probably the most critical period and follows the peak in world oil production. The final years of the 2010s decade will present great challenges for oil importing nations.
    Finally is worth mentioning that these four periods seem to fit on Samsam Bakhtiari's Four Transitions of which the first started last year.

    For economic growth and almost all of the other indicators, the last 20 years [of the current form of globalization, from 1980 - 2000] have shown a very clear decline in progress as compared with the previous two decades [1960 - 1980]. For each indicator, countries were divided into five roughly equal groups, according to what level the countries had achieved by the start of the period (1960 or 1980). Among the findings:

    • Growth: The fall in economic growth rates was most pronounced and across the board for all groups or countries.
    • Life Expectancy: Progress in life expectancy was also reduced for 4 out of the 5 groups of countries, with the exception of the highest group (life expectancy 69-76 years).
    • Infant and Child Mortality: Progress in reducing infant mortality was also considerably slower during the period of globalization (1980-1998) than over the previous two decades.
    • Education and literacy: Progress in education also slowed during the period of globalization.

    • There were approximately 2,230,000 marriages in 2005 -- down from 2,279,000 the previous year, despite a total population increase of 2.9 million over the same period.
    • The marriage rate in 2005 (per 1,000) was 7.5, down from 7.8 the previous year.
    • The divorce rate in 2005 (per 1,000 people) was 3.6 -- the lowest rate since 1970, and down from 4.2 in 2000 and from 4.7 in 1990. (The peak was at 5.3 in 1981, according to the Associated Press.)
    • 8.1% of coupled households consist of unmarried heterosexual partners, according to The State of Our Unions 2005, a report issued by the National Marriage Project at Rutgers University. The same study said that only 63% of American children grow up with both biological parents -- the lowest figure in the Western world.
    • In 2004, the state with the highest reported divorce rate was Nevada, at 6.4 (per 1,000). Arkansas was a close second, with a divorce rate of 6.3, followed by Wyoming at 5.3. The District of Columbia had the lowest reported divorce rate, at 1.7, followed by Massachusetts at 2.2 and Pennsylvania at 2.5. Take a glimpse at the upcoming list of industry events, and the impact of mobile games is readily apparent. The appeal of mobile game development is fairly obvious. The team size is typically a fraction of the size of a typical game development team, the development cycle is a few months versus a few years, and the budget is generally lesser. Moreover, phones are portable, networked, and more than one billion mobile phones are in use today. Whether mobile games will prove to be everything they’ve been hyped to be remains to be seen, but, for now, mobile games are hot and, consequently, so are those people with the skills to make them.

    The journey of mobile games has just begun. The present generation of wireless networks need further up gradation. This would enable faster transfer of data and enable people to play mobile games in real time.

    "Media corporations don't cover political news anymore. Political news coverage in 2000 was half what it was in 1996, and 1996 was half what it was in 1992. In 1981 the media received $80 million in political ads. By 2000 this had grown to $1 billion. The third leading source of revenue for media today is political ads. So if you are a politician today, the only way your issues, views, and polices get heard is through paid political ads. This is why only multimillionaires, those complicit in the system, those who won't rock the boat, those who can spend tens and hundreds of millions of dollars on political ads can go into politics today. The media's position is that providing free airtime for politicians [as they used to have to do] is an infringement of their "corporate free speech" rights, and they recently (2002?) spent $10 million on congressional lobbying to keep it that way." This artical goes in to detail on some of the changes that are projected to happen to our
    workforce by 2014. It talks of current trends in age and labor force demographics. Some
    demographics I found interesting. Like the transportation industry is pretty much at its optimal
    effiecancy and not growing. Other fields like education and business services I can see growing
    as estimated by this artical. As jobs become less labor intensive from automation, more and more
    people will need to be educated enough to create or manage these new technologies. Interesting
    piece if you're curious to what fields will be in high demand in the not so near future.

    Workers will increasingly choose more time over more money. The productivity boom in the U.S. economy during the twentieth century created a massive consumer culture--people made more money, so they bought more stuff. "Those who believe in "smokers' rights" would be well advised to consider the case of Helena, Montana, a city of about 70,000 that banned indoor smoking in public places in June 2002. The heart attack rate immediately began to decline, and by 6 month's time there were 58% fewer heart attacks for people living inside the city limits - but NO decrease for people living in the same area, but in places without a similar ban!! When the Big Tobacco lobby succeeded in "persuading" the state legislature to make such bans illegal, the number of heart attacks in the city immediately began to climb again, and within a few months had returned to normal. // Exposure to smoke, whether first or second hand, causes platelets (the blood cells that cause clotting) to become stickier, which leads to more frequent clotting in a matter of 30 minutes, and hence an increase in blockage of blood vessels leading to the heart - heart attack!! For statistical reasons, Countries (territories) with less than 200,000 in population, or fewer than 80 SETI users, or fewer than 4,000 completed packets are excluded. As a result, this report covers 102 countries (out of 225), which processed 99.7% of total packets received.
