Group Projects:
Be sure to get into a strong group project when you are in college. It is one of the only times where you have so many brains that are so close together to work on a project freely without time constrictions. It also helps everyone in the group if it is finshed. -Coleman Saitta

Portfolio Diversity:
Many people I've spoken to think it's important to include things in your portfolio that are outside of your "niche". If you're a game programmer, include that cool network utility that you wrote up. Throw in some artwork that you did. A lot of companies are looking for adaptable people with a wide range of skill sets. -Bill Nega

Quality Over Quantity:
Make sure your portfolio has your best work in it. Just because you were "messing around" in 3DSMax, doesn't mean you should add that render of a half pineapple, half wildebeest creature to your portfolio. It's better to have only a few really great pieces than a bunch of unimpressive work.-Trenton Kennedy

A great spot to post your portfolio. The down side is it's geared toward artists and doesn't allow for the sharing of application files. This isn't uncommon with many hosts for security purposes. Other than that this website is a great source for getting additional recognition.
