Future Problem Solving ProgramThis is a featured page

FERN LogoFuture Problem Solving Program International (FPSPI) is the leading global program teaching foresight at the high school level. Anyone who wants to advance early foresight education might find working with them to be a very high-leverage strategy. FPSPI is a 501c3. It's Director is Marianne Solomon. They are based in Melbourne, Florida, USA.

Started in 1974 by creativity expert Dr. E. Paul Torrance and his wife Pansy, FPSPI is an international program involving over 250,000 students from Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, the United States, and other countries.
The program has three divisions: Junior (Grades 4-6), Middle (Grades 7-9), and Senior (Grades 10-12).

They have an annual International Conference, on the campus of a prominent university, where over 2,000 of these students vie for the title of international champion, in team and individual categories, for developing solutions to global problems that are possible or probable in the future.

FPSP students do Problem Solving about Global Issues, Community Problem Solving, and Scenario Writing. Students research and analyze problems in such areas as: Alternative Energy, Artificial Intelligence, Climate Change, Cultural Prejudice, DNA Identification, E-commerce, Environmental Law, Freedom of Speech, Health Care Access, Media, Nanotechnology, Oceanic Species, Sports Medicine, Terrorism & Security, World Communication.

How can FERN help support FPSPI? Here are a few ideas:

  • Send volunteers and judges to help with their International Conference
  • Develop new and edit existing curriculum pieces for their program
  • Help them expand to new countries and high schools
  • Develop a FPSPI website (FERN affiliated) for high school students that plugs them into:
    • great college and career counseling materials,
    • a list of the most foresighted universities they might attend (see Foresight Rankings)
    • a list of high-impact degrees they might consider
    • a brief introduction to Careers and Graduate Degree Programs in Foresight (and introduces FERN!).
